What Kind of Auger Do I Need?

Auger attachments for excavators can vary drastically in power, considering the wide variety of applications they can be used for and the vast landscape of excavator machine sizes.

We group our augers into two primary classifications: Drilling, and Anchoring (Piling).

The two types are similar, but there are a few key differences in their design that allow Anchoring auger drives to generate significantly more torque than the Drilling auger drives. This is helpful when you need to securely implement an anchor or pile, as more pressure is needed to drive it into the earth. However, if you were to use such a high pressure drive on rock, you risk actually polishing the rock rather than slowly chipping away at it, the way a drilling drive would allow you to.

How To Choose the Right Auger For Your Excavator

It's helpful to understand the key components that make up the entire auger attachment. Augers are generally broken down into three parts: Mounting Frames, Drive Units, and Auger Bits.

Excavator Auger Mounting Frames

The often-overlooked Mounting Frame is a critical component of the auger drilling process. In fact, selecting a frame that allows you to quickly change out drive units without the use of a crane can potentially save you a lot of time and money on the job-site.
