Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making its mark on the construction industry, and the impact is set to be significant.
This is one of the our key takeaways from the 2023 State of the Industry Construction Technology Report, where 13% of respondents were already using interconnected equipment and a further 62% stated that technology would be crucial for their operations in the next decade.
AI, to anthropomorphize it a bit, is something that can speak data the way you or I can speak our native languages. The collision of Interconnected Equipment and AI Technologies will be captivating to unfold -- read on below to see our thoughts on it.
AI is still a novelty in the construction sector.
However, we believe that it's going to quickly become a necessary tool for improving efficiency and productivity. The AI Implementation in construction is not just about automating tasks but also about harnessing the power of data to make better decisions.
In Construction Management, for example, AI can evaluate project data and help streamline operations and improve project management. It can also enhance Construction Safety by predicting potential hazards and suggesting preventive measures, based on past incident data.
In the realm of Construction Design and Planning, AI can generate and evaluate multiple design options based on predefined criteria, significantly reducing the time required for the design phase.
These are all things AI can do right now.
The real benefit, in our opinion, will come when we can get granular enough data for AI to be able to make nuanced, situational decisions. How does equipment operate after years of use in the geography and climate of the northeast United States compared to the southwest? What parts will need to be replaced first? Are there any accidents correlated with this information that can be prevented?
These are just a few on-the-spot ideas -- imagine solving nuanced, business-specific problems with this framework.
It's our personal stance that AI can be an opportunity for immense benefit. As stated above, the way I like to think of it is that an AI can speak data the way that you or I can speak our natural languages. It brings numerous benefits to the construction industry where we can potentially have a vast landscape of operating data for it to parse and analyze.
The benefits of all of this can lead to increased efficiency and productivity by streamlining operations, removing or re-ordering repetitive tasks and allowing workers to focus on more complex tasks simultaneously. Imagine if you could see the entire process of a project, step by step, laid out at the same time. You'd be able to spot the inefficiencies pretty quickly.
AI can also contributes to vastly improved safety measures by analyzing past job data and predicting potential causes of hazards for a new job. Ideally, it can also suggest preventive measures and flag gear that has been in the field for too long without maintenance.
Generally, AI enhances Decision Making by providing valuable insights from the vast amount of data generated during construction projects. These insights can help construction teams make informed decisions, reducing the risk of costly mistakes.
Implementing AI in construction businesses involves integrating AI tools into existing workflows. This could mean using AI-powered software for project management, or deploying AI-based systems for safety monitoring.
As of right now, we haven't seen any public announcements of AI-integrated machinery yet. However, there are plenty of AI resources for the Project Management, Planning, Design, and Safety teams that are being built and refined every day.
At the very least, the organization and planning process of any construction process is teetering on the edge of an immense quality gain from AI-analyzed data sets.
Despite its potential, AI in construction also faces several challenges. The quality of AI as it stands today is still hit and miss. It's an immense help for some very specific parts of workflows, such as parsing unstructured data (ever tried to copy a PDF into excel? ChatGPT can do that in one click). However, it is still quickly apparent that AI will recite incorrect information as factual. It's deceptively human when interacting with it, but ultimately there is still a long way to go before we are able to validate accuracy with a 100% success rate.
There are also technological limitations, such as the need for large amounts of data and the complexity of construction tasks. As we adopt more Connected Equipment, this data will become more plentiful, increasing the effectiveness of AI analysis and recommendation based on it.
The future of Construction is undoubtedly intertwined with AI. That is inarguable. We're hurtling towards an exciting new era of opportunity; ripe with innovative potential. Emerging AI technologies promise to further revolutionize the industry, offering new opportunities and challenges. As AI continues to evolve, so too will its impact on the construction industry.
From improving efficiency and safety to enhancing decision-making, AI is set to transform the way we build. As we continue to explore and harness the power of AI, the dawn of a new era of construction begins to peek over the horizon -- and in our opinion, it looks amazing.
